I never thought I'd live in OC again, but you never know what life is going to bring. It's a good job opportunity and we are excited for this new adventure in our lives. Now that we really feel settled and at home here in PA, we're moving on. It'll be sad to leave so many good friends and such a beautiful part of the country. We're super excited to be closer to family and friends in the West again. We'll be there in June/July.Dawniahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13655561451676052995noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5198408186216974022.post-82473342702093377272013-05-05T13:52:00.000-06:002013-05-05T13:52:31.862-06:00Preston - the past 7 monthsI started out strong - posting every month or so and then nothing. So, here's a catch up post - Preston is now 14 1/2 months old. I can't believe how fast the time is going. At his 1 year checkup he 29 3/4 inches 17 lbs 3 oz. He started walking about a month ago. It's nice to have him on his feet. He walked on his knees for at least 2 months before that. It was funny to see him on his knees all the time. He is into everything. He can open doors already, so you never know where you'll find him. He loves to play in the bathroom or his brothers' room. He loves to go upstairs and hide. He loves to play with the phone. He loves to get into everything! He is a master of destruction and quite mischievious. He loves to climb under and through things. He loves to put things in his mouth and crawl around like a dog. He still doesn't talk much. He doesn't even say mama or dada. The only things he says are more and bye-bye. But he babbles all the time. He's as cute as can be. <br />
<br />
Preston is our big kid. Here are his stats along with Elliott's and Derek's at 1 year for comparison.<br />
Elliott 29 3/4 inches, 17 lbs 3 oz<br />
Derek 29 inches, 18 lbs 3 oz<br />
Preston 31 1/2 inches, 21 lbs 9 oz - he's in the 95th percentile for height and 50th for weight<br />
<br />
While Preston was well over 20 lbs at 1 year, Derek was just shy of 20 at 15 months and Elliott still hadn't hit 20 at 18 months. Preston currently weighs more than Elliott at 2 years old. Crazy! He's giving me some good arms. :) <br />

We finally made it to Washington DC at the beginning of April. I can't believe it took almost 3 years before we actually went. We had a great time. We stayed with our good friends, the Straits. It was so much fun to spend time with them and so nice of them to have us all in their home. They joined us in the city our first day. We spent 2 days exploring the city and the evenings hanging out having fun. I'm so glad we finally made the trip! There's so much more to see. I would have loved to see more of the memorials and Brent would love more museums, but there's only so much to be done in 2 days with kids. We were hoping to get lucky and see the cherry blossoms when we were there. Unfortunately, the predictions were off and they didn't blossom until 2 days after we left. Apparently they were only really nice for 3 days before the wind an rain took them away. We still had pretty decent weather so we won't complain.</div>

<br />
We finished the day at the American History Museum. I guess I didn't get any pictures there. Most of the cool stuff is off limits to pictures. The most memorable thing we saw was the flag that inspired "The Star Spangled Banner." It is huge! It's interesting that people for a long time were cutting pieces off of it as keepsakes. So there are parts missing and some patched parts, but what a neat piece of history. <br />
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Day 2<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tS5Dqq6lNkw/UXWN2CUfTEI/AAAAAAAAEDk/vDyJp1uJ0YQ/s1600/Ford%27s+Theater.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tS5Dqq6lNkw/UXWN2CUfTEI/AAAAAAAAEDk/vDyJp1uJ0YQ/s320/Ford's+Theater.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ford's Theater</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Elliott's teacher told him he should go to Ford's Theater. Unfortunately, we got into the city too late to be able to go inside. They still perform shows there, so it is only open limited hours for tours. The house on the right is the house where Lincoln died.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
National Archives</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This was my favorite, even though we had to wait in line for over an hour. I thought it was so cool to see the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence. The writing on the Declaration, I believe, is pretty faded, but the others are still easily legible.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Natural History Museum</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The kids only had so much energy, so we didn't explore the whole museum. Besides, I've heard that could take a couple days. :) We did see the bones, gems & minerals, and the Hope Diamond.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Air and Space Musuem</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There are a lot of cool things at this museum - the Wright Brothers plane; The Spirit of St. Louis; Amelia Earhart's plane; Apollo 11 command module; space suit worn on the moon, with moon dust still visible, and more.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
This is as close as we got to the Capitol Building - just a couple blocks, but a couple blocks we weren't willing to walk. The bottom picture is the Smithsonian.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Day 3</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
On Sunday before heading home, we stopped at Arlington. We got to see the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. That is a really neat, solemn experience. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We went to Gettysburg at the end of March. It's one of those things that's been on our list of things to do. It's not the funnest outing for kids but they actually did well. Preston wasn't that thrilled with the trip, but he did okay. Elliott and Derek thought the cannon and monuments were cool. Elliott really enjoyed the displays in the visitors center with all the guns that were used. After our initial stop in the visitors center, we drove around the battlefield. It's amazing how huge it is. We did an audio tour in the car as we drove around. After 1 1/2 hours or so, we finally skipped the end of the audio because it was taking a little too long. It would have been nice to take our time and really listen to everything, but the kids could only handle so much time in the car. It was neat to get out and look at the monuments. I believe they said there are over 1400 monuments on the battlefield - more than anywhere else in the world. That's a lot of monuments! The coolest place to stop was Little Round Top, site of the most famous engagement at Gettysburg. The boys got to feel how heavy a real musket is and see how hard it would be to tote that and all the gear around. It was really neat to go to Gettysburg and experience the history that took place there. </div>

We had a wonderful Christmas. I think this was the first Christmas where no one had a meltdown, everyone was happy and entertained all day. It was a really enjoyable day. The boys were excited with the presents they received. We loved being able to Skype with grandparents. </div>

It's hard to believe I have a 9 year old! Where does the time go? Elliott has grown and matured a lot this year. He is a great big brother and becoming a good helper. It's nice to have an extra pair of hands some of the time. We celebrated his birthday by going bowling as a family. We had a great time. He had Cub Scouts that evening, so he quickly opened his presents before he was off. He had a birthday party the following Saturday with 9 of his friends from church and school. We kept it simple with pizza and a movie here at home. The kids still managed to go crazy, but it was a mostly-controlled crazy. :) They were rambunctious but no one got hurt and everyone had a good time. Elliott requested an ice cream cake which turned out delicious! Elliott was really excited to get lots and lots of LEGOs for his birthday. He got 6 new sets from his friends plus one from us. Needless to say, he spent a few days doing nothing but build LEGOs. He loves it. He's also looking forward to spending his birthday money (perhaps on more LEGOs). He and Derek have also been having fun with some dart guns. All in all, I think he had a great birthday.<br />

I really don't think of myself as a creative person. This summer I got ambitious and made gifts for my dad and mother-in-law. I went to a paint-your-own pottery place. It was fun, but it took me a long time to finish them. I think I went in 4 or 5 times to complete them. I wanted them to be a little personalized, so I had the boys paint their fingerprints (butterflies and ants) . They turned out really cute. The hardest part was definitely the words inside the bowl. I hand-painted them and had to do it 3 times so it would show up properly. I am definitely pleased with the final results. </div>

Preston is 7 months old!! Where is the time going? The beginning of August brought his first 2 teeth on the bottom. He started sitting by himself and then began doing the army crawl. He gets anywhere he wants to now. He gets up on all fours a lot but doesn't make it far that way. He always has something in his mouth - fingers, burp cloth, toys, toes - anything goes. He loves playing with the bags of wipes. He has an affinity for cords - he can always find one that hasn't been hidden. He climbs under and over things to get to them. The beginning of September brought the top 2 teeth, with a third on its way. It's been lots of fun with all the teeth. His smile is forever changed. He is so much fun. He adores his brothers. He loves his momma. He's not very cuddly, but he's still the sweetest baby ever! </div>

<tr><td style="text-align: center;">Last month we went to Palmyra, NY to visit some church history sites and to see the Hill Cumorah Pageant. We drove to Rochester on Tuesday, making a short detour to visit the Aaronic Priesthood Restoration site. We got a little lost, since there isn't an exact address for the place. Once we found it, we realized you really can't miss it as long as you drive the right direction on the road. We stayed at a hotel in Rochester on Tuesday and Wednesday. The boys had fun swimming at the hotel. Preston did really well sleeping in a strange place, in a strange bed. We were really fortunate. On Wednesday, we spent the day in Palmyra. Our first stop was at the Hill Cumorah. We went to the visitor's center and then up to the monument. We followed that with a walk around the Palmyra Temple. After lunch in downtown Palmyra, we visited the E B Grandin Building, site of the publication of the Book of Mormon. It was interesting to see how they printed the first edition and what a slow, detailed process it was. We took a little sight-seeing break to play at a playground. The boys needed to get some energy out. We then went to the Joseph Smith Farm and Sacred Grove. Elliott really enjoyed all the sites. Derek had a rough time once it hit nap time. He wasn't very agreeable and wasn't interested in being in pictures. Shortly after we entered the Sacred Grove, we all had a wonderful experience. We were able to sit and talk about the special feelings we felt in the grove. Derek was even willing to take pictures and he started singing church songs. It was amazing to see the power of the Holy Spirit in the boys. I'm so glad we were able to have that experience together as a family. We finished our day at the Hill Cumorah Pageant. We got there quite early and encouraged Derek to take a short nap in the car. Fortunately, he fell asleep, which made for a much more pleasant evening. After dinner, the boys had fun running all over the pageant grounds while waiting for dark. The Sourwines, a family from our ward, were also at the pageant. We visited with them for a bit. Elliott convinced Missy (our Primary Secretary) to play tag. She's a trooper. I also ran into an old boyfriend, Andrew. He said hi and that was it. We all thoroughly enjoyed the pageant. We were glad we had our jackets and a blanket. It was a little cool, but overall we couldn't have asked for more from the weather. The day before was record heat. The morning threatened rain but none came. I'm really happy that we were able to visit Palmyra and be reminded of the history of how the church began. It is such a spiritually uplifting place. (Since blogger won't let me make a new paragraph or write in between pictures, I guess this will continue to be one really long paragraph.) On Thursday, we drove to Niagara Falls. What an impressive sight. It is so majestic. We enjoyed our ride on the Maid of the Mist. Derek didn't really appreciate it for most of the ride. He stayed in the middle of the boat next to the stroller. Towards the end of the ride, he finally went to the edge for a minute. Preston didn't know what to make of the whole thing. He was a trooper being stuck under my poncho getting water sprayed on his head. After the boat ride, we walked around and enjoyed the view of the falls. We ran into Andrew again - random. Our original plan was to stay in Niagara to see the falls at night and then stay at a hotel in Buffalo. However, we were done with the boat in the early afternoon and it started sprinkling. We didn't have anything to do to pass the next several hours before dark, so we decided to just drive home. It rained the whole way home. Since we were planning to still be gone on Friday, we headed down to Philadelphia. Our plan was to go to the Franklin Institute, but that didn't work out because of the new rules with the museum passes. Frustrating. We walked to the site of the Philadelphia Temple. It's still a parking lot, but we're looking forward to having a temple so much closer sometime in the next couple years. We decided to see the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall instead. Unfortunately, I forgot to ask Derek if he needed to use the bathroom before doing the Independence Hall tour. So about 10 minutes into it he really had to go. I made him wait for a little bit but then knew he wouldn't make it much longer. Preston was also being fussy, so I took them both out. It was a bummer I couldn't see all of Independence Hall, but I'm glad Elliott and Brent did. Getting out of Philadelphia was a nightmare, as usual. And once you're out of the city, there's no where to eat. Brent said he's glad he got to see the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, because that's all he really wanted to see and he's glad he doesn't have to go back to Philly any time soon. I agree - at least not until the temple is built. I've never had a pleasant experience with the drive. Overall we had an enjoyable vacation. It was so nice to get away for a few days. I didn't want to come home.</td><td style="text-align: center;"> </td><td style="text-align: center;"> </td><td style="text-align: center;"> </td></tr>

Me (clearly confused): What???<br />
Derek: The Lamanites say, "Moo Moo."<br />

Preston is 4 months old already! How the time is flying. He is a big boy, weighing in at 13 lbs 14 oz and measuring 26 1/2 inches long. Preston has the most adorable smile. We all love to make him laugh. The boys had him going for a while tonight. It was super cute. He is pretty mild-mannered. He does great at night. He has been waking up once during the night, usually around 2 or 3, but the last several days he has gone all night, until about 5:30. He's in bed between 6:30 and 7 every night. It's wonderful. I'm hoping that trend continues. He usually wakes up happy. I often wake up to the sound of him sucking on his hands. He's not the best napper, but I take what I can get. He does do well when we're out. When I know he's tired, if I put him in his car seat and cover him up, he goes to sleep without much fuss. It's really nice. I still find myself putting off things that need to be done around the house to sit and play with or just watch Preston. He is an absolute joy to all of us. The boys love to talk to him and play with him. Preston has torticollis, as did Derek. We're hoping to avoid getting a helmet. His head isn't nearly as flat as Derek's was. He has been getting physical therapy for almost 2 months to help strengthen and stretch his neck, as well as to help him learn other skills. He isn't rolling over yet, although he is rolling to his sides now. He loves chewing on things, especially his burp cloth. He has been extra fussy the past couple weeks, so he's probably teething. It would be nice to have something to show for all the pain - hopefully soon. Preston started eating food about a week ago. So far he's not really a fan. We'll keep trying.<br />

Elliott had his first Cub Scout Pack Meeting. Technically, it was the Blue & Gold Banquet, but there wasn't a banquet. It was a nice awards ceremony though. Elliott earned his Bobcat. He enjoys going to Scouts.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NvX-UzgK9D0/T_D7ofhrgjI/AAAAAAAADj4/WyNL6obXKbQ/s1600/Bobcat.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NvX-UzgK9D0/T_D7ofhrgjI/AAAAAAAADj4/WyNL6obXKbQ/s320/Bobcat.jpg" /></a><br />
Elliott had a great season playing baseball. His team was the Miami Marlins. They were a great group of boys and coaches. There were two main coaches, but there were several dads who helped at all the practices and games. The coaches were really encouraging and supportive. Elliott had a lot of fun and learned more about playing his favorite sport. It was a long season, so I'm happy it's over, but I'm glad Elliott was able to play.</div>

<span style="background-color: white;">Derek turned 4 on May 22. We celebrated in the usual style - dinner at Friendly's and fun at Chuck E Cheese. Derek continues to bring so much joy into our lives. He started reading recently and learned so quickly. He LOVES to read and is so proud of himself for being able to do it. He also loves singing. I love to listen to him sing along to the various "Silly Songs" CDs we have in the car as well as Primary songs, even if he is a bit off key. That just makes it all the more endearing. :) In Primary he always knows the answer when they are asked the words to a song. He is a fast learner. He is also very bossy. He likes to make sure things are done the way he thinks they should be done. Derek also loves to be read to and he gives great hugs. We love you, Derek.</span><br />

Preschool Graduation<br />
Derek had a great year in preschool. His teachers, Mrs. Kollar and Mrs. Shepard were fabulous. The end of the year program was really cute. The kids sang a bunch of fun songs. My favorite was Peanut Butter and Jelly, which unfortunately, we didn't get a video of. They also sang a cute skunk song. Derek was the job boss at school. He always knew who was in charge of what and made sure everyone did their jobs.</div>

Today was another double-special day. I had a lovely Mother's Day. Brent made breakfast for me this morning and the boys gave me lots of cards. I am so lucky to have 3 super sweet boys and a wonderful husband. I am also so grateful for an amazing mother who has taught me so much and is such a great example to me, as well as a wonderful mother-in-law.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We also got to bless Preston at church today. Brent gave him a special blessing and Preston was a perfect angel. When he was finished, Brent said Preston was super smiley. We missed having our families here today, but know they wished they could have been here. </div>

Preston is already 7 weeks old! I can hardly believe how fast the time has gone. He was 10 pounds even at his 1 month checkup. It's amazing how much he has changed in such a short time. To me I saw more of Derek in him when we was first born, but now I think he <span style="font-family: arial;">lo</span></span></span><span style="font-family: arial;">oks a lot like Elliott. There are times I still see the Walker side though, so he's definitely a good family mix. He has started smiling, which is so fun to watch. I have to admit, I spend a lot of time just watching Preston. I put a lot of other things on hold - like blogging and cleaning. But I only have this time once, so I'm trying to enjoy it while it lasts. Preston is a sweet baby. He is sleeping well at night, but he doesn't like to nap alone during the day. Occasionally he'll get a decent nap, but usually it's just cat naps. Elliott and Derek love to pat him, give him kisses, and hold him (for about 10 seconds). Preston definitely gets lots of love.</span></div><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 7.35pt; text-align: center; line-height: normal; font-family:arial;" align="center"><span style="font-family:arial;font-size:12.0pt;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><br />I am so thankful for many wonderful friends who have done so much for us these first weeks, from meals to clothes to watching the boys. I have been spoiled by not having to cook almost at all for since Preston was born. Now it's time to get back into the swing of things. Life with 3 boys is</span></span><span style="Times New Roman","serif";font-family:";font-size:12.0pt;" ><span style="font-size:100%;"> <span style="font-family:arial;">keeping me busy. I feel like Preston just lives in his car seat some days. Between school, karate, baseball, and scouts, Elliott (and therefore I) always have somewhere to be. We are all adjusting well. If only I weren't always so tired...</span><br /><br /></span></span><span style="font-family:arial;font-size:12.0pt;"><span style="font-size:100%;">Week 1</span></span><br /><span style="Times New Roman","serif";font-family:";font-size:12.0pt;" ><span style="font-size:100%;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pZsPaDZjIuc/T4LNWEe263I/AAAAAAAADgE/5L0OdZMJuvY/s1600/Preston%2BWeek%2B1.jpg"><img style="display:block; Here are the few pictures I've taken to mark this pregnancy. We're looking forward to welcoming our little one soon!<br /></div><br /><div style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wiKkpuKPqps/Tym4qpoATNI/AAAAAAAADdQ/85a_tS5n0Og/s1600/P1030181.JPG"><img alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wiKkpuKPqps/Tym4qpoATNI/AAAAAAAADdQ/85a_tS5n0Og/s320/P1030181.JPG" border="0" /></a> </div><div style="text-align: center;">December 1 - 28 weeks 4 days<br /></div><br /><div style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pkfFOl1XnKU/Tym4qjEG2TI/AAAAAAAADdc/jSZUnyiH8Ag/s1600/P1030280.JPG"><img alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pkfFOl1XnKU/Tym4qjEG2TI/AAAAAAAADdc/jSZUnyiH8Ag/s320/P1030280.JPG" border="0" /></a> </div><div style="text-align: center;">December 25 - 32 weeks<br /></div><br /><div style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uZ9V74oFjOo/Tym4rjuK5TI/AAAAAAAADdw/kRSyFB4qzfk/s1600/P1040019.JPG"><img alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uZ9V74oFjOo/Tym4rjuK5TI/AAAAAAAADdw/kRSyFB4qzfk/s320/P1040019.JPG" border="0" /></a> </div><div style="clear:both; text-align:CENTER">Today - February 1 - 37 weeks 3 days<br /><br /></div>Dawniahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13655561451676052995noreply@blogger.com2
